Interest in Irish literature studies developed at the University of Turin starting from the foundation of the Centro Studi Celtici (CSC), part of the Dipartimento di scienze del linguaggio e letterature moderne e comparate. The centre was established during the academic year 1993-94 and aimed to formalise the work of a team of researchers who had been working for many years in Anglo-Celtic fields (i.e., Anglo-Irish, Anglo-Welsh and Anglo-Scottish).

The founding members – Professors Melita Cataldi, Maria Antonietta Cerutti, Valerio Fissore, Joan Rees Franzinetti and Carla Vaglio Marengo – had produced translations, published individual and joint works, organised and participated in conferences and seminars, and, in addition, established and consolidated contacts with the Italian and foreign academic world. Over time, Professor Donatella Abbate Badin and Professor Irene De Angelis have also became members of the centre.

Over the years, the centre has promoted meetings and exchanges with Irish, Scottish, and Welsh universities, foreign research institutes, and literary artists and celebrities.

The centre has complied a vast collection of bibliographic material, available to both scholars and students, which is catalogued in the Biblioteca di Scienze del Linguaggio under the acronyms CEL and AC.

Between 1994 and 2012, numerous international conferences were organised with the support of the CSC.
